What to Know About Traveling to Vietnam: October Edition

What to expect for October in Vietnam?

The S-shaped country in Southeast Asia promises natural and cultural wonders every time of the year. But with each season comes unique delicacies that can make your trip feel even more special if you know the drill. The last few months of the year are always a bustling time for our international friends as the summer heat eases and the holiday season arrives. So, what should you know before your Vietnam October trip? 🍂✨

A red wooden bridge stretches across a calm green lake surrounded by trees, with people walking across it under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

It's not quite fall yet!

Yes, we know you have watched many TikTok videos that show the beautiful October skies lined with colorful leaves and soft breezes in Hanoi. In Vietnam, October weather is indeed cooler than during the summer, but if you are only packing sweaters and puffers, the lingering heat and humidity will knock you off your feet. The average temperature of the month is 25-28°C (77-82°F). If you plan on a good amount of outdoor activities (and you should), make sure to bring summer clothes and a mini handheld fan!

Vietnamese people do celebrate Halloween!

That is if you know where the celebration is. Although in Vietnam, October is modest in terms of holidays compared to the previous months, the young generation has increasingly embraced trick-or-treating  and Halloween costumes. Find your people on the Hoan Kiem Walking Street in Hanoi, Bui Vien Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City, and foreigner-friendly bars all around the country! 🎃 Like everywhere else in the world, keep in mind that costumes should be culturally respectful and the celebration should not disrupt the local daily life—check with your Vietnamese friends!

October 20th is for flowers!

In Vietnam, October 20th marks Vietnamese Women's Day, a day to honor our women for their ongoing and significant contributions to the development of our nation. Giving flowers to your female friends and Airbnb hosts, or simply saying an extra thank you to the female barista who prepares your coffee will make their day. You will also learn that buying fresh bouquets in Vietnam is cheap and painless as they are everywhere on the streets, just look out for scammers! 🌷

Talking about flowers, sneak in a trip to Da Lat or Ha Giang!

Located in the Central Highlands region, just an hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat is a famous travel destination for Vietnamese and foreigners alike. Starting from October, marigolds and white mustard flowers bathe the city in vibrant yellow and milky colors, coupled with the tranquil atmosphere to make a picture-perfect backdrop for your memories. Meanwhile, a six-to-eight-hour drive from Hanoi can take you northeast to Ha Giang, popular for its stunning fields of buckwheat flowers from October to December every year. Stay at least a couple of days in each city and discover what the hype is all about! 🌟
